Douglas relishes second chance at fatherhood

LOS ANGELES: Michael Douglas is grateful he was given a second shot at fatherhood in his later years — because age has made him a better parent to his children with Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The actor has one son from his marriage to Diandra Luker — Cameron, 31, who is currently behind bars on drug possession charges at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

After his divorce from Luker, Douglas, 65, went on to marry Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000. They have two children together, Dylan, nine, and Carys, six. Douglas is convinced becoming a dad again later in life has given him the chance to re-evaluate his priorities so he won’t make the same mistakes twice.

He says, “My career was the most important thing in my life, followed by marriage and children. It’s reversed now. I never anticipated starting a family and the joy of raising kids at my age. I think it’s easier for me to be a good father.”

Wife says Polanski a ‘marvelous’ husband

n PARIS: Film director Roman Polanski’s wife said she “understands perfectly” that women have been shocked by the 32-year-old sex case revived by her husband’s sudden arrest in Switzerland.

But she added in an interview with Elle magazine appearing Friday that in the 1970s, when the crime occurred, society viewed sex and drugs in a different light.

“My personal truth is that Roman is a marvelous husband and man,” said actress Emmanuelle Seigner, 43. “He is an impeccable man and I have nothing to reproach him for.”

The 76-year-old Polanski, who has two young children, is fighting extradition to the United States. The director was initially accused of raping a 13-year-old girl after plying her with champagne and a Quaalude pill during a 1977 modeling shoot. He pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse, then fled to France on the eve of sentencing in 1978.

“My husband never believed he was above the law. The proof is that he pleaded guilty...,” she said.

“There was a time a few years back that I kind of had baby fever. I kind of wanted to have a kid and I kind of got over it — not that I don’t want to have kids but I just didn’t have baby fever any more. I just want to take it any way it comes... I’m really good with kids actually,” he said.

“You hear those stories like once you have kids your life is over but I actually like my life the way it is. That being said, I think I’d be a great dad. I’d like to come back and have me for a dad,” he added.
