Sewage tank caves in, 1 killed
JEDDAH: A Sudanese worker was killed when a sewage tank he was working on collapsed in Nakheel district, east of the Haramain Expressway in Jeddah on Friday. The top of the tank and pavement collapsed and buried the laborer, spokesman for Makkah Civil Defense Capt. Abdullah Al-Amri said. He had been repairing the tank near a house. A rescue team including divers recovered the body. Al-Amri said he died due to asphyxiation after being buried under mud.
Furniture shops gutted in Jeddah
JEDDAH: Five Civil Defense teams put out a large fire that gutted four shops in a market at Haraj Al-Sawarikh in south Jeddah on Friday. The shops had large stocks of flammable household furniture and curtains. No one was injured, a Civil Defense official said. Investigations are under way.
Four medics die in road horror
TAIF: Two female medical workers, a Filipino doctor and an Egyptian nurse were killed when their car turned upside down in Taif on Friday morning. Two other nurses traveling in the car and the driver were injured in the accident. The five worked at a private hospital in Afif town. The car, which was traveling to Jeddah, lost control when a stray camel crossed the road. Police are investigating the accident.
Teenage girl run over by truck
BISHA: A Yemeni teenage girl was killed after being run over by a speeding truck loaded with construction material in Bisha on Friday. The accident occurred while the 13-year-old was crossing a busy road in the city center. Police and paramedics took the girl to Bisha general hospital but she died before they reached there. The Pakistani driver was arrested.
Tenders for KAU work in 2 weeks
JEDDAH: Tenders will be invited within two weeks to carry out a new campus project of King Abdulaziz University in Asfan, north of Jeddah, said Abdul Rahman Al-Youbi, undersecretary at the university. He said studies at the university’s Asfan branch would start early next year in a rented building. The new campus will have 15 colleges each for boys and girls. Higher Education Minister Khaled Al-Anqari announced recently that the new campus in Asfan would cover an area of 5.7 million square meters. Asfan, which is located outside Jeddah, has been witnessing a number of development projects in recent years under the leadership of its administrative officer Fawaz Hammadi.
Four held with fake Saudi IDs
TAIF: Police arrested four Yemeni nationals at a checkpost on the Taif-Riyadh road on Thursday, charged with carrying fake Saudi identity cards. They told the police that they were going from Riyadh to Makkah. They had hired the car from Riyadh at a charge of SR150 per passenger. The investigating policemen also discovered that the car they were traveling was stolen, Al-Madinah daily reported on Friday.
