RIYADH: The Riyadh Golf Club opens the 2010 season the way it ended — with a major — when the Dome Engineering Open Golf Tournament takes place on Friday.
The season opener at the tricky rolling layout off Gassim highway outside of Riyadh has attracted 120 golfers with more on the waiting list, according to RGC Director of Golf V. T.M. Rafi. Prizes in kind worth SR30,000 are at stake in the 18-hole tournament. Players will each receive gift bags before the start of play.
It comes on the heels of the 2nd annual DSCA (Downs Syndrome Charitable Association) Open tournament held Dec. 9-11 which was another huge success and won by UAE’s No. 1 Ahmed Al-Musharrek. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The men’s Division A (handicap 0-14) and Division B (15-21) will be a stroke play format and the men’s Division C (22-28) and Ladies Division Stableford format.
Among those who signed up for the prestigious competition are golfers from the Saudi national team including Ali Al-Sahli, Mubarak Al-Ghamdi and the veteran Ali Balharith, who is now the national coach of the regular Saudi men’s and junior teams.
The players from the expatriate communities are likewise well represented.
