The Farjam Collection at Dubai Investment Financial Center (DIFC) opened its third exhibition — From Matisse to Warhol: Works on Paper by Modern Masters — on Jan. 28. The exhibition displays some great masters of the 20th century, including Dali, Matisse, Picasso and Chagall and features many pieces never before seen in public.
All the works are from Dr. Farjam’s extensive collection composed of a wide variety of extraordinary and prized artworks, ranging from early Islamic art to contemporary Western pieces.
“For its third exhibition, The Farjam Collection departs from its former displays of Islamic art to present a fascinatingly varied display of drawings which cover 60 years of modern Western art,” writes Anna Moszynska, renowned author and expert in modern art. “The insights this exhibition offers are immensely valuable and instructive.”
The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first part narrates the evolving role of paper in the 20th century, and how it came to be considered a prestigious art form. Many artists had intended and considered their drawings to be their finished works. The second half looks at the more traditional role of paper as a preparatory medium. Here visitors are given the rare opportunity to make comparisons between the preliminary sketches and the final, finished product.
Emilie Faure, Collection and Exhibitions Manager, says, “Representing only a small fraction of Dr. Farjam’s collection of Western art, this exhibition affords us the rare opportunity of discovering the works of masters on paper.
“Paper is the most immediate medium available to artists and therefore offers us valuable insight into the creative process. The works are not only outstanding from an aesthetic perspective, but also deeply educational.”
On the evening of the opening, visitors had the opportunity to view the exhibition as part of Art Nights at Gate Village.
The Farjam Collection has chosen to present the exhibition to coincide with the elaborate event.
All exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public, but it is highly recommended to book in advance due to the popularity of the programs.
The Farjam Collection is open from Sunday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
