JEDDAH: The summary court in Jeddah has urged the governorate to give its opinion whether a Saudi football player who was found guilty of having an illegal relationship with a woman and being in possession of pornographic films deserves to be released from prison under the royal amnesty that was announced on the return of Crown Prince Sultan to the country.
The sportsman, who played for one of Jeddah’s two top clubs, has been in prison for the last two years. His case recently surfaced following the announcement of an amnesty by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to release petty criminals and people in prison due to matters relating to insolvency. The amnesty was announced to mark Prince Sultan’s return to the Kingdom from a yearlong trip abroad for treatment and recovery.
Abdul Aziz Al-Shathri of the summary court sent the player’s file to the governor along with documents presented by the Commission for Investigation and Public Prosecution regarding the case.
The player was arrested after police found bottles of alcohol at his home in Jeddah. He had earlier complained that an unknown gunman had attacked him and injured his hand.
Officers then inspected his house and found bottles of alcohol, women’s underwear and pornographic films.
