ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Nawaz Sharif has decided not to contest a by-election in his home constituency of Lahore.
PML senior leader Senator Pervez Rashid told Arab News on Thursday that a decision was taken to award the nomination to Pervez Malik instead.
Political analysts say there are a few factors why Sharif has decided not to return to Parliament. Firstly, they say that he would not be able to further his political career sitting on opposition benches. Secondly, his party suffered a humiliating defeat in an election to decide a National Assembly seat in Mansehra.
Jamiate Ulemai Islam won the election with Zar Gull, a relative of Sharif’s son-in-law, a surprising runner-up.
