Detained official suffers stroke
JEDDAH: A senior municipal official who has been in detention for his role in the crisis of the Nov. 25 flash flooding and also for allegedly embezzling large amounts of money suffered a stroke and was rushed to a private hospital in Jeddah, a prison source said Saturday. The sources declined to identify the official and would not say when the stroke took place but told Arab News that the man was under pressure by the investigators who confronted him with solid evidence proving his embezzlement.
Businessman held over flood disaster
JEDDAH: Police took into custody a prominent businessman in his Riyadh house on Friday on the orders of the fact-finding committee of the flood disaster in Jeddah. The identity of the businessman was not made public; he is known to be a former president of a major sports club. He is believed by authorities to have been involved in the sale of land for housing development in areas at risk of flooding. The man was not found in his house in Jeddah when the police came to arrest him.
More than 8,000 applicants for 20 jobs
JEDDAH: An Arabic daily reported on Saturday that 8,442 people have applied for 20 vacancies to work as office messengers and security guards for hospitals and clinics in Taif. One hundred applicants will be called in for interviews and then 20 of them will be chosen. The newspaper said the department publicly announced the vacancies to avoid criticism of nepotism in appointments.
