- RIYADH: Andrew Sinnen, the new president of the Sri Lanka Expatriates Society, has assumed the leadership of the 18-year-old organization from outgoing president Nirone Fernando.
Fernando himself installed Sinnen during the society’s 18th annual general meeting at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh last week.
A new committee of 15 members was unanimously elected for the current year at the meeting, supervised by the embassy’s Commercial Secretary Yasantha De Silva.
They include Manel Gamage as general secretary and Asantha Fernando as general treasurer.
Sinnen said that his first task would be to launch a membership drive among members of the community.
He asked all present members to help develop a new plan for 2010.
Fernando called on the new committee to continue the good work of the society, which had already helped a large number of distressed workers.
The society operates a free medical clinic and benevolent fund to assist workers in need.
