Member of the National Assembly Malik Aamir Yar Waran’s case was challenged in the Supreme Court by Pakistan Muslim League (N) deputy Abid Sher Ali.

The court referred the case to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) that is verifying the academic credentials of all parliamentarians. 

The commission found Waran’s degree to be fake.

Waran submitted his resignation to National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza who accepted it.

The HEC is verifying the degrees of all parliamentarians in line with the orders of the Supreme Court, an official of the Election Commission said.

He said at least 35 members of Parliament who had not filed their university degrees with their nomination papers were holding fake degrees.

Former President Pervez Musharraf had introduced a law that parliamentarians must hold a university degree.

In another development the Supreme Court on Thursday admitted for regular hearing a petition challenging the top court’s verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

The petition was jointly filed by Kamal Azfar and Law Secretary Masood Chishti on behalf of the government.

Earlier, the top court summoned Federal Law Minister Babar Awan to explain why the court verdict on NRO had not been implemented.
