A district court imposed the sentence on Nazar Aim, 45, and Iwan Saprin, 25, after they pleaded guilty Tuesday to causing the death of at least two boat passengers last month, prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said.

Fourteen Indonesians believed to be heading back to Indonesia’s Sumatra Island drowned when the rickety, overcrowded fishing trawler sank amid bad weather June 22.

Eight other Indonesians, including the two boatmen, were rescued.

Prosecutors charged the men because they did not provide lifejackets on the boat and should not have been transporting so many passengers.

The court in Malaysia’s central Negri Sembilan state also sentenced the men to be whipped twice with a rattan cane and spend an additional eight months in prison for coming into Malaysia without valid travel documents, Wan Shaharuddin said.

An estimated 800,000 Indonesians work illegally as construction site workers and in other menial jobs in Malaysia. Several boat accidents that killed dozens of illegal immigrants have been reported in the past few years in the Malacca Strait, which separates peninsular Malaysia from Sumatra.
