- RIYADH: In a major move to enhance cooperation between the two rival mobile operators, Saudi Telecom Company (STC) and Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) announced on Friday the completion of the technical interconnect link of their two networks, a step to activate the advanced 3G services to exchange video calling services and MMS (multimedia messages) between customers from both providers by next week.
In a joint statement made Friday, the heads of the two mobile operators said the move was a step forward in strengthening the fruitful cooperation between the two leading operators in the Kingdom using the third generation technology.
“The technical cooperation with Mobily was launched with the sole idea of offering the best benefits of the 3G technology to the mobile users in the Kingdom,” said STC CEO Saud Al-Daweesh.
He added that subscribers can send MMS up to 400 kilobytes in size.
Mobily CEO Khalid Al-Kaf said subscribers would reap the benefits of the joint effort.
“We have practically covered the new (3G) technology in more than 90 percent of the populated areas in the country,” he added.
In another recent development, Mobily announced its mobile services would be part of Saudi Arabian Airlines new On Air service that allowed passengers on the carriers Airbus A330s to use their mobile services during flights.
