No. 7 seed Xavier Malisse of Belgium advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 victory over Ryan Sweeting. The last time the Atlanta Athletic Club hosted an event, in 2001, Malisse advanced to the final before losing to Andy Roddick.

Americans Taylor Dent, Donald Young and Robby Ginepri also won, while Gilles Muller of Luxembourg will face No. 2 seed John Isner in the second round Wednesday after beating Michal Przysiezny of Poland 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Ginepri, who beat Nick Lindahl of Australia 7-6 (4), 6-2, will face No. 6 seed Mardy Fish in the second round.

Dent overcame 13 double-faults to beat James Blake 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. He plays No. 4 seed Horacio Zeballos of Argentina on Wednesday.

Young, who will play Anderson, beat Dudi Sela of Israel 7-5, 6-0.

Second-round matches on Thursday include Roddick, the No. 1 seed, facing Rajeev Ram, No. 3 seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia playing Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, and Malisse against Illya Marchenko of Ukraine.

Lacko Lacko beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
 

In Bad Gastein, Austria, second-seeded Timea Bacsinszky rallied to defeat qualifier Ekaterina Dzehalevich 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Gastein Ladies quarterfinals on Wednesday.

It will be the Swiss player’s second quarterfinals of the season after Barcelona in April. Bacsinszky won just one match in her previous three tournaments at Wimbledon, Budapest and Prague.

Bacsinszky will face Sandra Zahlavova for a place in the semifinals. The Czech player defeated Ukrainian qualifier Lesya Tsurenko 6-2, 6-4.

No. 8 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia also advanced after Simona Halep of Romania pulled out with a right shoulder injury when Sevastova led 5-7, 6-1, 5-0.

Sevastova will play a former Gastein Ladies finalist — either Yvonne Meusburger (2007) or Lucie Hradecka (2008).

Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia defeated Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 after rallying from a break down three times in the deciding set.
 

In Hamburg, Germany, third-seeded Juergen Melzer of Austria defeated Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third round of the German Open, but three other seeded players were eliminated on Wednesday.

Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan edged fifth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), qualifier Pere Riba outlasted fellow Spaniard and eighth-seeded Albert Montanes 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4) while Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated No. 16 Michael Berrer of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Melzer was a semifinalist at the French Open and has won 14 of his last 19 matches.

Meantime, France will host Argentina on an indoor hard-court in Lyon in their Davis Cup semifinal in September.

The French Tennis Federation said Wednesday the tie will be held at the Palais des Sports de Gerland from Sept. 17-19.

This will be the fifth time that Lyon hosts the Davis Cup, and the first time since the 1991 final when France defeated the United States 3-1.

France reached the semifinals with a 5-0 win over defending champion Spain. Argentina advanced with a 3-2 victory in Russia.

France has won all four previous meetings against Argentina, but the teams have not met since 1982.
