- JEDDAH: The Jeddah Municipality, Saudi Environmental Society and the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities have jointly launched on Thursday a cleaning operation in Jeddah’s historical districts, the initial phase of a campaign to clean the entire city.
A large number of young volunteers participated in the event.
“The campaign, the initial stage of cleaning the whole of Jeddah, will never be the last of its kind,” said Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras said in a statement at the opening of the campaign.
“This will be followed by many such operations until the city achieves a level of cleanliness that pleases local residents. The cooperation of men and women volunteers will, apparently, help boost environmental awareness among the Jeddah public.”
The cleaning campaign will take place every Thursday until the historical districts are fully clean, Abu Ras added.
Campaign volunteers will visit all 415 archeological buildings and clean the premises from top to bottom.
Executive Director of Saudi Environment Society Prince Nawaf bin Nasser stressed the importance of the participation of young volunteers in the cleaning campaign.
“The zeal of the young men and women volunteers to clean the archeological locations signals their concern for the historical city,” the prince said.
