Some mechanical malfunctioning reportedly caused the accident and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The pilgrims had left Dammam shortly after the congregational prayer.

Yusuf El-Saeed Abdel Majeed, 24, and Osama Muhammad Mustafa, 42, died at the scene of the accident. Mohsen Kemal Ahmad, 40, died later at King Fahd Hospital in Hufuf where nine of the injured are also receiving treatment, said director of the hospital Dr. Abdul Mohsen Al-Mulhem.

Another pilgrim is in the Prince Sultan Hospital in Orair where all of the injured were taken.

The injured pilgrims were identified as Yusuf Mahmoud, Muhammad Nabih Al-Kenani, Waleed Fareed Abdel Shafi, Muhammad Ebrahim Muhammad Ataallah, Ala Abdel Haleem Ahmad, Muhammad Hasan Suleiman, Hatem Muhammad Mustafa, Madhat Omar El-Marasi, Tariq Muhammad Ali and Ala Hamza Mustafa.
