Eight teams have been stationed to maintain and clean Makkah’s flood drainage system in addition to 10 other teams in Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat. The total length of the city’s flood drainage system is 250km-long and covers Makkah and the holy sites.

Al-Bar said the municipality is taking good care of the flood drainage system and ensuring it is fully operational. He said the system is maintained annually to ensure rainwater is drained easily.

Al-Bar said although it usually only rains once at a certain time of the year, rainfall in Makkah is sudden and the nature of the city’s geography, which includes a series of mountains, causes many difficulties. He added that the municipality is trying to fix all problems as quickly as possible and is looking to lay a new flood drainage system in the near future. He also said that the total length of the flood drainage system in the holy sites is 130 km — 55 km in Mina, 30 km in Arafat and 45 km in Muzdalifah.
