When Love Comes, a drama about family tension in Taiwan, beat four other finalists for best feature in an annual awards ceremony held near Taipei.

The Golden Horse best director award went to Chung Mong-hong of The Fourth Portrait, a Taiwan film on marriages of convenience and domestic violence.

Drama idol Ethan Juan Ching-tien, 28, won best actor for his role in the Taiwan gangster movie Monga. Lu Liping of China was named top actress for her emotional scenes in the Beijing-based drama City Monkey, about a mother’s conflict with her teenage son.

The awards, in their 47th season, judge Chinese-language films from Taiwan, China including Hong Kong and Macau, and Malaysia and Singapore.

Once closed to films from mainland China, the Golden Horse began allowing movies from there in the 1990s. Past winners mainly came from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Films from China have claimed a growing share of the Golden Horse nominations as the nation’s movie industry catches up with its economic might. China was represented in all major categories this year.
