- LONDON: Britain's Electoral Commission says the winning Conservative Party spent twice as much as the Labour Party in the 2010 election campaign.
Figures released Thursday show Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives spent 16.7 million pounds ($25.9 million) on the election that ushered their coalition government to power.
Labour spent just 8 million pounds ($12.5 million) - a drop from the 10 million pounds ($15.6 million) it spent on its 2005 election campaign, which ended with Labour leader Tony Blair's re-election as prime minister.
Total campaign spending on the 2010 vote clocked in at 31 million pounds ($48 million). The Liberal Democrats, now part of the coalition government, spent 4.8 million pounds ($7.5 million).
