- LONDON: British police say they have received “significant new information” about phone-hacking by a tabloid newspaper and are reopening their criminal investigation.
The Metropolitan Police said Wednesday that the new information concerned hacking by the News of the World newspaper in 2005 and 2006.A reporter and a private investigator working for the tabloid were jailed in 2007 for eavesdropping on the voice mail messages of royal staff.The newspaper claimed hacking was limited to that pair, but many prominent figures believe they also were targets.Several are taking legal action against the paper.The scandal last week claimed the prime minister’s communications director, Andy Coulson, a former News of the World editor who quit amid continuing allegations about his role in the hacking.
