The top-seeded Lopez lost to Frank Dancevic of Canada 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (8) in a 2-hour, 8-minute tussle broken by rain.

Earlier, third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and seventh-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany were knocked out as the seeded players struggled in the high altitude in Johannesburg.

Only No. 4 Kevin Anderson, No. 6 Adrian Mannarino and No. 8 Michal Przysiezny survived the opening round.

Tipsarevic was beaten by Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (4) in a rain-delayed match continued from Tuesday.

Tipsarevic missed seven of 10 break points and saved just one from five on his own serve to go down in 2 hours, 43 minutes.

The match was tied 3-3 in the third when it was suspended Tuesday.

Schuettler wasted an early lead in falling to Go Saeda of Japan 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Second-seeded Yen-hsun Lu and fifth-seeded Florent Serra both lost Tuesday.

Also on Wednesday, Dudi Sela of Israel got past Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 in another match held over from Tuesday.

South African wild card Fritz Wolmarans hit 25 aces to beat Dutchman Igor Sijsling 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Slovakia’s Karol Beck defeated Brian Dabul of Argentina 7-5, 7-6 (4).
 
Stepanek loses in Zagreb Indoors

In Zagreb, Croatia, fifth-seeded Florian Mayer advanced to the quarterfinals of the Zagreb Indoors after defeating Radek Stepanek 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain also made it to the last eight on Wednesday by beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

In first-round matches, Illya Marchenko of Ukraine defeated Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 7-5, 6-2. Arnaud Clement of France defeated Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6-3.
