The police identified the alleged spy as Vishambhar Tarachand Agarwal, a native of Haryana state working as supervisor with Bhoruka Roadways Indian Limited in suburb Nigdi of Pune. He was allegedly collecting sensitive information about Indian Army establishments in Pune from an army soldier Brijesh Kumar, posted with Signal Regiment in Pune Cantonment.

A senior police officer told the media that Agarwal was nabbed by the Crime Branch team on a tip-off near the Alankar Theater and 30 photographs of army units in Southern Command, a compact disc containing photos of army units in Pune Cantonment, a sketch map of an army establishment and sensitive information about army officers of different ranks and their telephone numbers were seized from him.

During interrogation, Agarwal said he got the material from Kumar. The police later seized a cell phone with two SIM cards, a bank debit card, Rs.3,000 in an envelope and a wrist watch. The police are also investigating whether Agarwal had received training from ISI operative and whether he was operating under more names.

Pune Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar said “We are confident that Agarwal is an ISI agent and that he was transmitting sensitive information about defense establishment in Pune to Pakistan through unknown person. The arrest was a combined effort of state and national-level investigation agencies.”

Agarwal was arrested under Sections 3 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and 120 (b) of the Indian Penal code.

He was produced before R.L. Wankhede, Hudicail Magistrate Frist Class (JMFC) who remanded him to police custody till Feb. 7.
