Residents of Baghdadiyah, one of the districts heavily hit in the flood on Jan. 26, are still waiting for shelter while their damaged homes are repaired.

According to National Society for Human Rights member Maatooq Al-Shareef, many residents in that district have lost all their belongings and have not received sufficient relief.

“The umdah (district head) is, seemingly, not keen on attending to the needs of the victims in the district. The residents whose homes are partly damaged have not been provided with alternate arrangements. Their belongings, including clothes, have been washed away in the flood,” Al-Shareef said.

However, Muhammad Al-Maghrebi, a resident of nearby Bani Malik district, told Arab News on Thursday that Civil Defense teams visited him and his neighbors and offered all necessary relief material.

He added that families whose homes were damaged were given other houses. He also commended the umdah who used to visit the flood victims every day and also for the plentiful charity items supplied to them.

Meanwhile, many members of damage-appraisal committees, whose members are officers of Civil Defense, municipal employees and officials of other government departments, said they hoped to  receive overtime compensation without delay unlike what happened after the Nov. 25, 2009 flooding.

Members of the 90 committees appointed after the 2009 flood were not paid for their overtime work until last Saturday, over a year later. They received SR300, which they claim isn't adequate for the work they put in.

Thirty committees have been appointed to assess the loss in the Jan. 26 floods.
