Punjab has asked the Federal government to take custody of the US nationals, who, according to Punjab police, were involved in the Lahore shootout.

One of the US nationals has been accused of hitting a motorcyclist to death.

Officials told Arab News the Interior Ministry has placed the name of the three Americans, including the driver of the US Consulate in Lahore, on the exit control list. Davis is currently in Punjab police custody in Lahore and is awaiting trial for murder.

The Interior Ministry, through the Foreign Office, has also written to the US Consulate asking for the three accused Americans to be handed over to the Punjab police, said the official. He, however, declined to name the three individuals.

The US Embassy in Pakistan said they were not aware of the developments.

“We have not received any such information on the issue as yet,” said Courtney Beale, acting spokesperson of the US Embassy in Islamabad.

However, Courtney told Arab News the US Embassy never accused the two deceased boys as operatives of Pakistan’s intelligence outfit. She said she was misquoted by the media.

Meanwhile, the US ambassador asked President Asif Zardari to release Davis.

Ambassador Cameron Munter delivered the message during a meeting with Zardari on Monday in Islamabad.

The US has said Davis has diplomatic immunity and should not have been held after he shot the two men on Jan. 27.

In another development, the widow of Muhammad Faheem, one of the two civilians shot dead by Davis, committed suicide after taking poisonous pills on Sunday, fearing the American would be released without trial, police and doctors said.

Shumaila, wife of Faheem, took poisonous pills and was taken to hospital in Faisalabad, local police chief Usman Anwar said, where she died despite attempts to save her.
