Cricket Australian announced Tuesday that Hussey had not overcome a torn hamstring and first-choice spinner Hauritz had not recovered after dislocating his right shoulder in a one-day match against England last month.

Both players underwent surgery in bids to be fit for the World Cup, although their chances of recovering in time for the start of the tournament were never high. Hussey conceded he likely would have been unavailable for the first two matches anyway.

The loss of 35-year-old middle-order batsman is a big blow to Australia, considering he was one of only two batsmen in form during the Ashes series loss to England and averages almost 52 in 151 ODIs, regularly forced into the role of salvaging an innings.

Callum Ferguson and spin bowler Jason Krejza were drafted into the 15-man squad, which is due to leave Wednesday for India.

The national selection panel “has determined that the best strategy to ensure a successful campaign is for Australia to enter the tournament with a fully fit squad of 15 from the first game,” chief selector Andrew Hilditch said.

The three-time defending champion Australians will play warmup matches against India and South Africa before its opening World Cup match against Zimbabwe at Ahmedabad on Feb. 21.

Ferguson, 26, averages 44 in his 28 ODIs, while right-arm spinner Krejza took 12 wickets on his test debut in India in 2008 but only played one more test and only made his ODI debut for Australia last Sunday, taking 2-53 in Australia's win over England at Perth.

“Callum has an excellent record in one-day international cricket and played well in the limited-overs match against England in Sydney recently. We think he'll play well in sub continental conditions,” Hilditch said. “Jason toured India with the Australian test team in 2008 and understands those conditions. We're certain he'll be a key member of our squad.” Australia's squad has been plagued by injuries, with skipper Ricky Ponting only just recovering from a broken finger which has sidelined him all this year. Other potential squad members Shaun Marsh and spinner Xavier Doherty weren't considered due to injuries which forced them out of all or part of the 6-1 ODI series win over England.

Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Ponting was recovering well.

“He is batting regularly and is expected to transition into unrestricted training soon after the team arrives in India,” Kountouris said, adding that Brad Haddin was expected to overcome a knock on the knee during the seventh ODI against England and Steve Smith was making good progress from a groin strain.
