The CBI team interrogated Gaikwad for 20 minutes and questioned him about the alleged Building Completion Certificate (BCC) given by him to the housing society when he was chief of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Soon after the corruption into the housing society meant for the widows of Kargil war martyrs came to the fore, the state government swiftly cancelled the BCC certificate granted to the society. This led to several questions being raised about the corruption and irregularities relating to the society. The state government immediately removed the then state Chief Secretary J.P. Dange and appointed Gaikwad in his place as part of a damage control exercise.

The promotion of Gaikwad to the chief secretary rank, superseding several senior officers, created heartburn amongst his colleagues. Thereafter, the MMRDA justified the BCC granted to the housing society in an affidavit filed in the Bombay High Court, it is learned. It is in this regard that the CBI questioned Gaikwad, sources said.

During interrogation, the CBI sought more documents related to the housing society from him. The CBI also collected detailed information of other officers involved in the scam from Gaikwad.

The CBI asked him about the progress of inquiries of officers who were named in the case by the CBI last month. The CBI also asked Gaikwad whether he had recommended to the federal government for the suspension of the tainted officials.
