Doctors described the 26-year-old Pole's condition as good, but decided to keep Kubica in intensive care to avoid moving him again before his final operation, a spokesman for the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure said on Monday.

Polish news station TVN24 had earlier quoted Kubica's girlfriend as saying his state had deteriorated.

Kubica's latest surgery was to his shoulder and leg on Friday. On Feb. 6 he crashed while competing in a rally race and immediately underwent surgery to repair bones, veins, and muscles in his right hand.

“Robert's physical and psychological condition has gotten worse,” Kubica's girlfriend, Edyta Witas, was quoted as saying on TVN24's website.

No other details were given.
