- KABUL: At least one service member from the NATO-led force in Afghanistan was killed in an apparent “rogue” shooting in the increasingly volatile north, Afghan and coalition officials said on Friday.
Munshi Majeed, the governor of northern Baghlan province, said there had been a shooting inside a base operated by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
An ISAF spokesman in Kabul said: “We have had a report of a shooting inside a base in that area. We can confirm one ISAF service member killed.”
German troops account for the majority of foreign forces in Balkh and neighboring Kunduz province, although ISAF would not confirm any details about nationalities or other casualties.
A spate of “rogue” shootings by Afghan soldiers and police have underlined the pressure on US and NATO troops as they try to train Afghan forces rapidly to allow the handover of security responsibility to begin in the middle of this year.
