It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a spy drone! AeroVironment has created the Nano Hummingbird. It’s a flapping wing aircraft that carries its own energy source, and uses only its flapping wings for propulsion and control. The Nano Hummingbird is capable of climbing and descending vertically, flying sideways left and right, flying forward and backward, as well as rotating clockwise and counter-clockwise, under remote control and carrying a video camera payload. The hand-made prototype aircraft has a wingspan of 16 centimeters tip-to-tip and has a total flying weight of 19 grams. This includes all the systems required for flight; batteries, motors, communications systems and video camera. The aircraft can be fitted with a removable body fairing, which is shaped to have the appearance of a real hummingbird. The aircraft is highly maneuverable, able to fly in and out of a building through a normal-size doorway. The Nano Hummingbird has been created to meet the requirements of DARPA — the research and development office for the US Department of Defense.

SlideShare, a presentation-sharing community of more than 45 million users, has introduced  Zipcast, a fast, simple and social web conferencing service. The only requirement for Zipcast is a browser — there are no downloads, and there is no waiting time before meetings start. To use Zipcast, you must be a SlideShare member. Create an account through an online form or through Facebook Connect. Hosts set up an online meeting room and can upload presentations up to 300 MB in size. Each SlideShare member is given a unique Zipcast meeting room URL — e.g., www.slideshare.net/NAME/meeting — that can be easily shared. There is no limit to the number of people who can join a public or private meeting, and the service scales automatically as meetings grow. The web conference Zipcasts take place entirely within the browser window so you’re free to do other tasks during the online meeting. Once in a meeting, chats occurring in the meeting can be made public on Twitter or Facebook, extending the meeting beyond its original participants to draw others in. Additionally, the SlideShare homepage displays an activity feed of the current public meetings, so the site’s existing user base can easily connect to them. The service is free. Learn more about it through www.slideshare.net/zipcast/.
