- SEATTLE: Analysts say Motorola’s Xoom tablet computer is powerful enough to challenge Apple’s iPad.
Motorola Mobility’s gadget went on sale this week.
It’s seen as the iPad’s first real competition — it has a bigger screen, cameras for video chatting and recording high-definition video, and it runs a new version of Google’s Android software.
IHS iSuppli peeked inside the Xoom and found that Motorola picked a lower-end screen than the iPad’s, but parts that control its touch-sensitivity are on par with Apple’s product.
And, the processor that controls how fast software runs is twice as speedy as Apple’s own chip.
Xoom, which costs $600 with a two-year contract, can be upgraded for a faster Verizon Wireless network later.
ISuppli found that people will need new hardware installed for that to work.
