An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed there were at least two air strikes launched at militant targets, saying they were in response to rocket and mortar attacks at Israel.

Medics said one strike was launched on a military post of the enclave’s ruling Hamas movement in Rafah, on Gaza’s border with Egypt. In a home nearby, a baby was hit in the head by fragments, though medics said the injury was light.

The wounded man, described by medics as a civilian, was injured in an earlier strike on a training camp for fighters in Gaza. The described his condition as moderate.

Two strikes launched later in the day targeted buildings empty of residents near the Israeli border. The owner of one of them received a telephone warning beforehand, and there were no reported injuries, medics and witnesses said.

Palestinian medics also reported two Israeli air strikes before dawn on Saturday against targets of the Islamic Jihad group. There were no injuries.

Islamic Jihad had been blamed for a rocket fired on Wednesday from the Gaza Strip that struck the deepest in Israel since the Gaza war of two years ago. It damaged a home in the city of Beersheba, 35 km from the enclave.

That rocket attack had followed the killing of an Islamic Jihad member in Gaza, and the wounding of another in Israeli tank fire at the coastal territory.

A statement from Israel’s military said at least four rockets had been fired from Gaza since Wednesday and that Israel “will continue to respond harshly” to what it called “terrorist activity.”
