Her landlord blocked the doors of her house with iron bars when she failed to pay the accumulating rent, Al-Watan daily reported on Friday.

Wafa Muwallad’s parents have been bedridden for many years. Her mother has been terminally ill for the past 17 years, and her condition was worsened by a spinal disorder that has rendered her immobile, speechless and deaf. The mother underwent a double mastectomy.

The mother was not eligible for treatment from government hospitals because her father’s Saudi citizenship was withdrawn 16 years ago.

Things further worsened when her father also became paralytic five years ago. Not only did she know how to repay her debts and pay the rent, she had no idea from where her food for tomorrow would come.

She said the landlord unlocked the doors of her house recently when he saw some journalists visiting the district to see the condition of the victims from the Jan. 26 floods. Recently, she herself developed diabetes.

“The cost of treatment for all of us and food and other basic needs is beyond my means. I don’t want to beg. I went to many offices seeking the return of my father’s citizenship so that we could become eligible for welfare pensions and free treatment. But everything failed. That is why I attempted to kill myself. I cannot see my parents suffer,” Wafa managed to say, choking back the tears.

She also did not have any hope of ever getting married and raising a family, as she could never be able to leave with her parents in this condition.

Wafa’s story was brought to the attention of some journalists when they were looking for flood victims in Ghulail.
