“The revolution of the Libyan people launched Feb. 17 includes all groups of people who wanted freedom and reinforcement of democratic institutions in the country,” a statement from the committee said.

The committee said the government was trying to suppress the revolution using brutal force and killing innocent people. It also condemned the government’s use of destructive weapons and air strikes against unarmed civilians.

The committee reiterated that Libya was a signatory of the Arab Human Rights Charter issued by the Arab League summit in Yunis in 2004.

The committee urged the Libyan government to stop its use of force against demonstrators immediately, as it was a clear violation of human rights, and accept its people’s demands.

“We also denounce Libya’s breach of international human rights law and Arab human rights charter,” the committee said and welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision to try responsible Libyan officials at the International Court of Justice for their crimes.

The committee also opposed the use of mercenaries by the Qaddafi government to frighten Libyan people.

“We also demand Arab countries to implement Security Council Resolution 1970 regarding the conditions in Libya and freeze Libyan assets,” it added.

The committee urged the international community to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the Libyan people after creating safe passages to deliver relief supplies to victims. The committee opposed foreign military intervention in Libya.
