Scotsman Ernie Merrick parted ways with the club he led to A-League titles in 2007 and 2009 by mutual consent at the weekend, leaving Mehmed Durakovic to take charge of the team for the Group E meeting at Docklands Stadium.

“Our club sets extremely high standards and we are disappointed with the results of the recent A-League season, along with our start to the AFC Champions League campaign,” said chairman Anthony Di Pietro in a statement on the club’s website.

“Our intent is to continue to be the benchmark club in the A-League. We wish to be successful in Asia and believe this decision will assist in taking us to that level.”

Melbourne are making their third appearance in the AFC Champions League and have yet to progress beyond the group stages of the competition but their hopes of success against Jeju United were increased with the news that midfielder Grant Brebner should return following a calf injury.

Jeju are also looking for their first win of what is their debut AFC Champions League campaign after Park Kyung-hoon’s side lost 1-0 against Tianjin Teda in their opening encounter two weeks ago.

The situation in Japan has led to the postponement, too, of Nagoya Grampus’ Group F meeting with inaugural AFC Champions League winners Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.

FC Seoul, therefore, will take on China’s Hangzhou Greentown in Group F’s only fixture aiming to build on their 1-0 win in Al Ain in Matchday 1 while Hangzhou also go into the game off the back of a win over Nagoya.

Former Korea Republic international Lee Young-pyo serves the second of his two-game ban and will miss Al Hilal’s trip to Doha to face Qatari champions Al Gharafa in Group A.

Al Hilal slipped up in their first outing of the 2011 AFC Champions League campaign, losing 2-1 in Riyadh against 2007 finalists Sepahan while Al Gharafa were held in their opener by Al Jazira of the UAE.

Al Jazira travel to Esfahan to take on a Sepahan side that won 2-0 against Naft Tehran at the weekend in the Iran Pro League, a victory that moves the club to within a point of league leaders Zob Ahan.

In Group B, Saudi side Al Nassr host Iran’s Esteghlal after both sides drew their opening games two weeks ago.

Al Nassr had a late own goal by Bojan Miladinovic to thank for sharing the points in their opening game with a Pakhtakor side who meet Al Sadd in the Qatari capital Doha on Wednesday evening.
