Arab News had first reported the fudging of date of birth by Dr. Tayade in April 2010. But the momentum gained after the ACB trapped the state medical education director and four of his subordinates two weeks ago.

The state medical education department was compelled to send Dr. Tayade on forced leave after the print and electronic media exerted pressure on the government after the registration of cases against Dr. Tayade by the ACB.

Medical Education Department Secretary Milind Mhaiskar confirmed to the media on Thursday that Dr. Tayade has been sent on compulsory leave and that a departmental inquiry would be instituted against him.

However, the Maharashtra medical education department appears bent on protecting Tayade even though it sent him on forced leave after a fresh FIR was filed against him for allegedly submitting forged documents about his date of birth.

The Shiv Sena – BJP Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council which have cornered the state Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on the appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner P.J. Thomas and a number of land scams, is not willing to let the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government in the state get away from the serious issue of corruption and doctoring of birth date in service records by Dr. Tayade.

The young firebrand BJP legislator from South West Nagpur Devendra Fadnavis told the media that the matter relating to Dr. Tayade was a serious one and he along with other BJP legislators would raise the issue in the ongoing budget session in the Assembly as also in the Council.

Sena and BJP leaders contacted by Arab News said that they were not satisfied with the action taken by the government of sending Dr. Tayade on forced leave or launching a departmental inquiry against him. “This is not enough and another way to protect the corrupt and dishonest official. Our demand is that Dr. Tayade should be dismissed from service under Article 311 of the Indian Constitution and similar action be taken against his co-conspirators who have plundered public money to the tune of tens of millions of rupees. Action should also be taken against the two medical education secretaries and deputy secretaries who have indirectly been involved in the corruption,” they said.

When Dr. Tayade’s boss, Dr. Vijaykumar Gavit the state minister for Medical Education, with whom Dr. Tayade was often found hobnobbing, was asked by the media about what action the ministry contemplated against Tayade, Gavit in a defensive mode said, “I learnt about the corruption allegation only a month ago. The issue of his date of birth was brought to my notice only two days ago. We are looking into the matter.”
