Put into bat in the third round, Bharat Chipli struck an undefeated 61 off 35 deliveries to help Chargers post a challenging 175-5 off their 20 overs.

Bangalore was reduced to 29-4 in the seventh over and never recovered, slumping to 142-9. Only three batsmen posted double figures, while Dale Steyn and medium-pacer Manpreet Gony shared six wickets.

Chargers lost aggressive left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan for 11 early but his opening partner Sunny Sohal hit 38 with five fours and a six. His partnership of 50 in six overs with skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who made 36, launched the recovery.

Chipli, who hails from Karnataka of which Bangalore is the capital, turned on the heat with five boundaries and three sixes.

Chipli, who hit sixes off successive deliveries from spinner Ryan Ninan and three successive boundaries off India speedster Zaheer Khan, put on 43 for the third wicket with Sangakkara and 55 for the next with South African JP Duminy (22), who turned 27 on Thursday.

In reply, Bangalore struggled for any lasting partnerships.

Ishant Sharma dismissed Bangalore danger man Tillakaratne Dilshan for 7 in the second over and man-of-the-match Steyn sent back bowler Zaheer, who was surprisingly promoted to No. 3 but didn't score.

Gony then dismissed opener Mayank Agarwal for 16 and South Africa star AB de Villiers for a duck in successive overs to effectively derail Bangalore's chase.

India batsman Virat Kohli struck a defiant 71 for Bangalore before Gony bowled him for his third wicket of the innings.

Steyn ousted Cheteshwar Pujara for 25 and South African countryman Johan van der Wath for a duck off successive balls in the 17th over to crush any hopes by Bangalore, and finished with three wickets.

On Friday, Kolkata Knight Riders plays Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, and Mumbai Indians takes on visiting Kochi.

Deccan Chargers 175-5 in 20 overs (Bharat Chipli 61 not out, Sunny Sohal 38, Kumar Sangakkara 36; Zaheer Khan 3-32), def. Royal Challengers Bangalore 142-9 in 20 (Virat Kohli 71; Dale Steyn 3-24, Manpreet Gony 3-31) by 33 runs.
