Kedar Dhakal, a deputy superintendent of police, says visa assistant Mehboob Asif was shot Thursday as he stepped out of the embassy building in Katmandu. The assailants fled on motorcycles.

Azhar Nazir, press officer at the embassy, said Asif is in stable condition in a hospital with bullet wounds in his stomach and hand.

Dhakal said police have questioned dozens of people and were searching for the assailants.

Police and embassy officials said they did not know the motive for the attack.
