Sohal struck 62 off 41 balls and Sangakkara 49 off 35, building a crucial second-wicket stand as Deccan posted a challenging 168-4 after electing to bat.

In reply, Delhi Daredevils could only manage 152-7.

It was the third win in five matches for Deccan, while Delhi has only one win in four matches.

The night game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium between host Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals then had to be called off because of rain, with the two teams splitting two points.

The Daniel Vettori-led Bangalore has just one win so far and has three points from five matches.

Shane Warne's Rajasthan, which has won two games, has five from five.

Earlier, in the first match at the Ferozeshah Kotla, Sohal and Sangakkara came together after the early dismissal of left-hander Shikhar Dhawan, who was bowled by Irfan Pathan after he had struck two well-timed fours for a total of eight runs.

Sohal, a former Kings XI Punjab player, smashed eight fours and a six, reaching his half-century in 35 balls.

Sangakkara also had eight fours and a six, once hitting left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem for a six and two fours off the same over that went for a total of 16 runs.

After Sohal and Sangakkara fell, Australian Cameron White produced an unbeaten knock of 31 off 25 deliveries to boost the total.

Delhi made a brisk start but captain Virender Sehwag (12) departed after smashing Australian allrounder Daniel Christian for three successive fours. Sehwag was caught by Christian at point off medium-pacer Harmeet Singh, who also dismissed Aaron Finch (zero) in his next over and finished with an impressive 2-27 despite going for 16 in his third over.

Delhi, struggling on 38-3 in the sixth over, could not take control despite a fighting knock of 51 by David Warner.

The diminutive Australian opener struck six fours and a six off 48 balls before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off part-time spinner Dhawan.

“We did the basics very well today,” Sangakkara said.

“We got a couple of wickets in the first six (overs) and were lucky to get Viru (Sehwag) early on.” Yogesh Nagar (23), Venugopal Rao (21) and James Hopes (17 not out) could not do enough to supplement Warner's effort.

On Wednesday, Mumbai Indians host Pune Warriors at the Wankhede Stadium in the first game, while Kolkata Knight Riders host Kochi Tuskers at the Eden Gardens.
