In an address to the nation Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan said that calm was being restored in the troubled parts of Africa’s most populous country. Voters are set to cast ballots in gubernatorial elections across Nigeria on Tuesday.

But riots broke out in Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north after the Saturday presidential election. That violence and subsequent reprisal attacks have left at least 100 people dead and forced 40,000 from their homes.

On Thursday, Jonathan urged religious leaders “not to use the sacredness of our places of worship to promote messages that could lead to hate.”
