- BRUSSELS: European Union President Herman Van Rompuy says the EU can do little to help Syrians in their uprising against President Bashar Assad.
Van Rompuy is quoted in Tuesday’s edition of De Standaard newspaper as saying the EU would likely not get the support of the Arab League or the United Nations to help out.
The EU has come under criticism for not being active enough in denouncing the killings and violence as the Assad regime tries to suppress the revolt.
The EU has been diplomatically active in opposing Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi in recent months and several EU nations are involved in the air campaign to protect civilians there.
