Judge Andrea Teixeira says in her ruling that the retired officer broke Brazilian laws protecting religious freedom.

The Monday ruling says former inspector Raul Oliveira Dias Alves verbally accosted the woman, a Brazilian citizen, inside a bakery last year.

He loudly made insulting comments about her clothing and the Islamic faith, and asked what she was doing in Brazil.

The ruling noted he showed signs of being drunk.

Another judge will decide how Alves does his community service. He will also face still to be determined restrictions on his movement during weekends.
