Philipp Petzschner of Germany upset Youzhny 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 to avenge a semifinal loss to the Russian last year.

“My goal is to make at least the semifinals, like last year,” said Petzschner, who reached his second quarterfinal of the year.

Bulgarian teenager Grigor Dimitrov reached his first career quarterfinal when he rallied to beat fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Dimitrov, who is ranked No. 69 and will turn 20 next month, is the only teenager in the top 100.

Baghdatis snapped a six-match losing streak with his first-round win in Munich, where he was a semifinalist in 2007 and last year.

Potito Starace of Italy defeated sixth-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-4, 6-2 on a day of rain delays.

Starace will play Petzschner in the quarters.

Because of the delays, organizers moved the last second-round match between Florian Mayer of Germany and Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia to Thursday.
 

In Oeiras, Portugal, Robin Soderling won his first clay-court match of the season Wednesday, beating Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the second round at the Estoril Open.

The top-seeded Swede lost his opening match on clay in Barcelona last week. The two-time French Open runner-up is preparing for the clay-court Grand Slam tournament next month at Roland Garros in Paris.

Soderling overpowered Chardy in the first set, winning four straight games after twice breaking the Frenchman and twice not conceding a point on his own serve.

Both players were plagued by unforced errors in the second set and broke three times apiece.

A dispute with the umpire over a call in the second game of the decider appeared to unsettle Chardy, allowing Soderling to rack up 13 straight points.

The fifth-ranked Soderling, the only player in the top 10 playing in Portugal, had earned a bye into the second round.

Sixth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci eliminated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

The top three seedeed women — Alisa Kleybanova, Jarmila Gajdosova and Klara Zakopalova — all advanced to the quarterfinals.
 

In Belgrade, Spaniards Albert Montanes and Feliciano Lopez advanced to the quarterfinals of the Serbia Open on Wednesday.

The fourth-seeded Montanes rallied to beat Michael Berrer of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Lopez defeated wild card Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Montanes won seven straight games starting at 2-2 in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead in the decider before cruising to victory.

Lopez broke for a a 2-1 lead in the second set with a forehand winner after chasing down a drop shot by Gonzalez. The Chilean, who was playing his first tournament since returning from an eight-month injury layoff after hip surgery, broke back immediately but couldn’t stop Lopez from converting his third match point in the tiebreaker.

Earlier, Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia advanced by beating Ricardo Mello from Brazil 7-5, 6-3 during another wind-swept day of the ATP tour event organized by the family of Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic will open his clay season later Wednesday by playing qualifier Adrian Ungur of Romania. The second-ranked Serb has won 24 consecutive matches this year, including victories at the Australian Open and hard-court tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami.
