- BERLIN: The foreign ministers of Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany and six other nations are calling on the international community to renew its efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear material.
The 10 ministers said in a joint statement Saturday the goal of their initiative is to “work toward achieving nuclear disarmament and a strengthening of the international nonproliferation regime.” German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told journalists in Berlin that the international treaty banning nuclear tests should be adopted by all countries “and finally enter into force.” He added the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons should be banned internationally.
Germany hosted the talks that were also attended by the foreign ministers from Chile, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, Poland, Mexico and Turkey.
