Dell's Alienware has just announced the specs for its massive new flagship M18x gaming laptop — although the machine's release date and price are still a mystery. The M18x will offer powerful Dual GPU options with the fastest graphics memory (GDDR5) on all graphics options. This desktop replacement will the first laptop built on Intel's “Huron River” architecture with a factory overclocked Intel Core i7 Extreme Quad Core processor up to 4GHz. The laptop comes with an 18.4-inch FHD WLED 1080p display for the best visuals possible and it can be ordered with wireless HD audio and video for latency-free streaming to larger screens. The M18x will also be equipped with HDMI 1.4 for connection to 3D-capable HDTVs and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports for up to 10x the speed of USB 2.0 connections.
 

Laster Technologies has piqued interest with its SmartVision glasses that become video displays. It will be possible to link the spectacles to many IT sources including mobile phones, PDAs, portable DVD Players, laptops, netbooks, tablet computers and game consoles. Graphical information is relayed to the glasses using a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection and appears on the inside of the lenses. The SmartVision glasses will offer add-ons such as voice and gesture command to replace mouse control. A micro camera will be available and object recognition will enable the information fed into the lens to be integrated with the real world. This will provide the elements for Augmented Reality in Real Time with the tracking and matching of objects.

In the future, your consumer electronics may take on the look and luster of gold and silver using organic environmentally friendly materials. This is all thanks to two beetles — the brilliant gold (Chrysina aurigans) and silver-colored (Chrysina limbata). The beetles have provided optic researchers with new insights into the way biology can recreate the appearance of precious metals. This may allow researchers to produce new materials based on the natural properties found in the beetles’ coloring. The discovery was announced in the journal, "Optical Materials Express," from the Optical Society (www.opticsinfobase.org). A team of researchers at the University of Costa Rica discovered that the beetles’ metallic appearance is due to light being refracted through — and reflected by — the unique structural arrangements of many dozens of layers of exo-skeletal chitin in the elytron, a hardened forewing of the beetles that protects the delicate hindwings that are folded underneath.
