After Seattle scored in the top half of the 12th, the Orioles bounced back in the bottom half against Brandon League (0-3). Derrek Lee hit a leadoff single, and League hit Vladimir Guerrero and Adam Jones with pitches to load the bases with no outs.

Matt Wieters hit a liner that shortstop Luis Rodriguez snagged, but Hardy followed with a bouncer up the middle that scored Lee and pinch-runner Jake Fox .

Hardy was mobbed by his teammates, who celebrated their second extra-inning comeback in the series. Two nights earlier, Baltimore scored twice in the 13th for a 7-6 victory.

League hit only two batters with pitches all last year. He was 9 for 9 in save opportunities before blowing two in three games against the Orioles.

Ichiro Suzuki led off the 12th with an infield single off Jim Johnson (2-1), Seattle’s first hit since the fifth inning. Two straight groundouts got Suzuki to third base, and Miguel Olivo lined a single past third baseman Cesar Izturis for a 1-0 lead.

Orioles rookie Zach Britton and Seattle left-hander Jason Vargas both went nine innings. Britton gave up three hits, struck out five and walked none in the longest outing of his brief big league career. Vargas yielded seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

Royals 11 Yankees 5: In New York, Eric Hosmer and Melky Cabrera homered and Kansas City beat New York, sending the Yankees to their first home series loss of the season.

New York’s Robinson Cano homered a day after he was hit in the head with a pitch, and Alex Rodriguez homered for the first time in 65 at-bats.

Sean O’Sullivan (2-2) retired his first 13 batters before running into trouble, but pitched into the seventh to give Kansas City its eighth win in 12 games, and drop the Yankees from first place for the first time since April 13. New York lost for the sixth time in nine games and slipped a game behind Tampa Bay just as archrival Boston prepared to come to town for three games.

The Royals had a season-high 16 hits.

Rays 7 Indians 4: In Cleveland, James Shields pitched seven strong innings to finally beat Cleveland, and Tampa Bay did some more road repair to their record with a victory over the Indians.

Tampa Bay has won 10 of 11 on the road and owns the majors’ best mark away from home at 13-5. The Rays are 21-7 overall following a 1-8 start. Cleveland lost for just the second time in 16 home games.

Shields (4-1) gave up two runs and seven hits. The right-hander came in 0-4 in six starts against Cleveland, the only AL team he hadn’t beaten. He improved to 4-0 with 1.12 ERA in his last five starts overall.

Reid Brignac , Sam Fuld and Evan Longoria had two RBIs apiece and the Rays handed Justin Masterson (5-1) his first loss. The Rays didn’t have outfielder B.J. Upton . He served the first game of a two-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball following a tirade after he was ejected on May 4.

Asdrubal Cabrera homered for Cleveland. The Indians had their 14-game home winning streak stopped by David Price on Wednesday.
