- MUMBAI: The Indian government has drawn contingency plans to evacuate Indian nationals from Yemen, and has told the national carrier Air India to be prepared to evacuate more than 14,000 Indians from Yemen, in view of the deteriorating law and order situation, according to an Air India source in Mumbai.
In an advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs asked all Indians in Yemen to leave because of escalating violence between rebels and forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The ministry said, “Keeping in view the evolving situation and the increase in violent incidents in Yemen, all Indian nationals living in the country are advised to exit the country through whatever commercial means available.
The statement further said, “Till such time they are able to exit, Indian nationals are also advised not to venture out except under absolutely unavoidable circumstances. The Embassy of India and our Ambassador in Yemen will continue to function in Sana’a and can be contacted for any assistance by Indian nationals till such time they are able to exit the country.”
The Air India source told Arab News, that the national carrier would not find any problem in evacuating the small number of Indian nationals in Yemen, and that the carrier was in state of full preparedness to bring back the Indians from Yemen as and when the government asks it to do so.
