The agreement was singed by Jordanian Transport Minister Mohannad Batayneh and his Iraqi counterpart Hadi Al-Ameri.

"The accord is designed to boost bilateral integration and enhancing safe and efficient transport with a view to increasing the flow of passengers and merchandise between the two countries," Batayneh said during the signing ceremony.

The rail system between the two countries is also due to link the Red Sea port of Aqaba with Baghdad to revive the Jordanian port's old role as conduit of Iraqi trade.

Meanwhile, Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit said Sunday that he planned to visit Iraq soon to discuss means of boosting bilateral economic ties.

Bakhit made the remark during a meeting with the transport ministers of Jordan, Iraq and Egypt who met in Amman to discuss tripartite cooperation in the sphere of transport.
