- BERLIN: Police say they discovered a telephone booth, a homemade hand grenade and dozens of fire extinguishers in a Hamburg apartment as they investigated a suspected kidnapping.
Officials say the suspect forced a 26-year-old Israeli woman to go to his mezzanine apartment at gunpoint last Friday evening.
The woman escaped around three hours later by jumping out of the window, over which the suspect had stretched barbed wire. Neighbors called police, and the man was arrested at his apartment.
Police spokesman Jens Ratfeld said Wednesday the 30-year-old German suspect so far has given no information to investigators.
Police are still combing the apartment.
Media have speculated that the telephone booth was intended as a torture chamber but police say they can’t confirm that.
