Civil Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Khaled Mubarak Al-Johani said Saturday there were no casualties or major damage caused by the fire, which started due to a burning cigarette butt in a room on the fifth floor.

The spokesman said the Civil Defense’s operations room was informed of the fire at 3 p.m. and immediately dispatched six rescue and fire-fighting teams to the scene. "The fire did not spread outside the room," he said.

Al-Johani said the entire fifth floor was evacuated for fear that the smoke might affect residents but no one was hurt or injured except the person in the room where the fire started sustained some burns on his hand and was treated at the location by paramedics.

The spokesman also said 60 palm trees were burned when fire broke out at a plant nursery in the southern town of Al-Ula on Thursday. He said the fire spread eventually to a 120,000 square meter area.

The spokesman did not reveal the cause of the fire but said it spread fast due to strong wind.
