The protest follows an agreement signed by the two countries on Tuesday. The pact gives Bangladeshi citizenship to thousands of residents of the 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh but does not give a time frame for the process.

Protest organizer Mofizar Rahman says thousands of residents marched through the streets in Panchagarh town Saturday night and refused to light lamps in their homes to demand a specific deadline for giving them citizenship.

The enclaves are the result of absurd map drawing during the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent.

Rahman says similar protests will take place Sunday.
