Tampa Bay moved within 3 1/2 games of the AL wild card leaders, sweeping the three-game series to go a season-high 17 games over .500 at 81-64.

Boston has lost five consecutive games, its longest skid since opening the season 0-6, and nine of 11 overall. The teams play each other four more times, in a four-game series beginning Thursday night at Fenway Park.

Shields (15-10), who has won four consecutive starts en route to his career-best 15th win, allowed seven hits over 8 1-3 innings.

The Rays went up 8-1 on Upton’s 20th homer in the fifth off Matt Albers. Upton finished with four hits and walked once. He and his brother Justin of the Arizona Diamondbacks became the first set of siblings in major league history to both have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in the same season.

In Anaheim, California,  Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson homered, New York scored two key runs when Peter Bourjos dropped a fly ball in the seventh inning, and the Yankees beat Los Angeles to snap a four-game skid.

Derek Jeter had two hits and scored the go-ahead run for the Yankees, who moved 3 1/2 games ahead of slumping Boston in the AL East.

Howie Kendrick and Bourjos each hit a two-run homer for the Angels, who dropped 2 1/2 games behind AL West-leading Texas.

Cory Wade (5-0) pitched the sixth inning for New York after Freddy Garcia scuffled through the first five.  

In Arlington, Texas, C.J. Wilson scattered five hits over eight shutout innings, Adrian Beltre homered twice to reach 301 for his career and Texas eliminated Oakland from playoff contention.

Wilson (16-6) struck out 11 and walked one, following up on his first career shutout — an 8-0 win at Tampa Bay last Tuesday.

Wilson set a career high for victories, but manager Ron Washington pulled him after the left-hander threw 111 pitches.

Beltre had four hits while Craig Gentry and Ian Kinsler added three apiece for the Rangers, who have taken nine of their last 10 from the A’s this season.

In Detroit, Doug Fister pitched seven scoreless innings in another terrific start for Detroit and Jose Valverde set a team record with his 43rd save in a win over Minnesota.

The AL Central-leading Tigers have won nine straight for the first time since 1984, when Detroit won the World Series.

Fister (8-13) allowed three hits, struck out five and walked two. Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth, and Valverde allowed a run in the ninth but held on for his 43rd save in 43 chances.

Fister is 5-1 since being acquired from Seattle on July 30.

In Toronto, Converted pitcher Adam Loewen hit his first major league home run against his original team to help Toronto beat Baltimore.

Jose Bautista drove in the tiebreaking run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly, sending Baltimore to its 29th loss in the last 34 games in Toronto dating to June 2008.

Joel Carreno (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first career win and Frank Francisco finished for his 14th save.

In Chicago, Ubaldo Jimenez threw six effective innings and Luis Valbuena homered in Cleveland’s victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Valbuena also singled twice and scored two runs as the Indians collected 14 hits. Trevor Crowe had three singles and Carlos Santana added a two-run double.

Jimenez (3-2) issued five walks, but allowed just two runs and three hits. The right-hander, acquired from Colorado before the July 31 trade deadline, struck out two and improved to 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA over his last four outings.

In Seattle, Alex Gordon hit a pair of RBI doubles and four Kansas City pitchers combined to hold Seattle to six hits.

Rookie left-hander Everett Teaford (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to pick up his first big league victory in his first career start after 23 relief appearances.

Blake Wood took over in the seventh and tossed two hitless innings. Greg Holland gave up a two-out RBI double to Ichiro Suzuki in the eighth. Joakim Soria pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 35 opportunities.
