- BUCHAREST: A Romanian lawmaker has proposed a bill obliging students and teachers to sing the national anthem once a week and schools to hang the national flag in every classroom.
- Maria Stavrositu, a lawmaker for the governing Democratic Liberal Party, proposed the bill Tuesday in Parliament.
The move came after a Romanian singer was fined last week for omitting a line from the national anthem before a key soccer match, saying it could refer to Romanian President Traian Basescu.
The prefect of Bucharest then fined the singer some $1,700 for defiling a national symbol. The proposed law evokes the communist era, when every classroom had a portrait of dictator leader Nicolae Ceausescu.
